Technische Hochschule (University) of Karlsruhe, Germany under the supervision of Prof. R. Criegee. After a postdoctoral stay at Harvard University in Prof. E.J. Corey's group and a Habilitation at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) he became full professor of organic chemistry at the University of Giessen, Germany, in 1971. From 1977 until 2003 he was professor of chemistry at the ETH Zürich. Since April 2003 he is officially retired but still running a small research group.
